Course Description

The purpose of this course is to equip NDIS workers and frontline staff with the knowledge, confidence, and skills to manage situations where participants may become distressed, agitated, or aggressive. De-escalation is not about control but about creating a safe, calm, and respectful environment for both the participant and the worker. By learning structured de-escalation techniques, staff can prevent unnecessary escalation, safeguard human rights, and reduce the risk of harm.

The course also strengthens compliance with the NDIS Code of Conduct and Practice Standards by ensuring workers respond to behaviours of concern in a lawful, ethical, and person-centred way. Ultimately, the goal is to promote dignity, safety, and trust in all interactions while supporting workers to manage challenging situations effectively.

Course Outcomes

By the end of this training, learners will be able to:

  1. Define de-escalation and explain its importance in disability support. Learners will understand what de-escalation means, how it differs from restraint or control, and why it is central to safe and respectful support. They will be able to link de-escalation to participant dignity, human rights, and legal compliance.
  2. Identify risks and triggers that can escalate situations. Learners will be able to recognise common triggers that may lead to conflict or agitation, including environmental, communication, and emotional factors. This understanding will help them act early to prevent escalation.
  3. Apply safe and compliant de-escalation procedures. Learners will gain practical tools to use calming communication, body language, and structured interventions. They will be trained to respond in ways that reduce harm and meet workplace health and safety obligations.
  4. Align practice with NDIS Practice Standards and organisational policies. Learners will understand how de-escalation connects to compliance requirements under the NDIS, including the Code of Conduct and restrictions on regulated practices. They will be able to apply strategies within their organisation’s frameworks.
  5. Build a culture of respect, safety, and accountability. Learners will be encouraged to model positive behaviours, share responsibility for safe environments, and contribute to an organisational culture that values wellbeing, transparency, and reflective practice.
