Course Description

The purpose of this course is to provide advanced training in the correct selection, use, and disposal of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in disability and aged care practice.

PPE is not just about wearing gloves or masks; it represents a structured barrier system that protects both workers and participants from the spread of infectious diseases and harmful exposures. In this module, learners will gain deeper knowledge on advanced practices such as correct donning and doffing sequences, managing PPE shortages, and recognising risks associated with improper disposal.

The course also ensures learners understand their compliance obligations under the NDIS Practice Standards, WHS legislation, and the Australian Guidelines for Infection Prevention and Control. Ultimately, this training equips workers with confidence to maintain safety and dignity for participants while fulfilling professional and regulatory requirements.

Course Outcomes

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  1. Define PPE and its role in preventing infection and harm: Learners will clearly explain the different types of PPE, their protective functions, and how they safeguard workers and participants in NDIS environments.
  2. Identify risks and hazards linked to incorrect PPE use and disposal: Learners will recognise how misuse or poor disposal of PPE increases risks of infection, cross-contamination, and regulatory non-compliance.
  3. Apply advanced procedures for donning, doffing, and disposing of PPE: Learners will demonstrate step-by-step techniques for safely putting on, removing, and discarding PPE in compliance with best-practice guidelines.
  4. Align practice with NDIS, WHS, and Australian infection prevention guidelines: Learners will integrate national standards and organisational policies into their PPE decision-making and daily practice.
  5. Promote a culture of safety and accountability in PPE use: Learners will contribute to building safe workplaces by modelling correct PPE behaviours, supervising others, and embedding accountability into organisational culture.
