Course Description

The purpose of this course is to provide community support workers with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to ensure safety when operating vehicles in participant transport. Vehicle safety in the NDIS sector is not just about driving correctly, it is also about protecting participant wellbeing, ensuring compliance with laws and organisational policies, and reducing risks for both workers and participants. By completing this training, learners will understand how their daily driving and vehicle maintenance responsibilities contribute to the broader goals of participant safety and service quality. This sets the foundation for responsible and accountable practice within the community support environment.

Course Outcomes

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  1. Define vehicle safety and its relevance in NDIS contexts
    • Learners will develop a clear understanding of what vehicle safety entails in disability and community support environments. This includes recognising vehicle safety as part of participant safeguarding, not simply as a driving responsibility.
  2. Identify risks and hazards associated with transport
    • Learners will be able to recognise common hazards such as faulty equipment, poor vehicle maintenance, unsafe driving practices, or failure to secure mobility aids, and understand the consequences of overlooking these risks.
  3. Apply safe driving and vehicle maintenance procedures
    • Learners will be equipped with practical steps for daily vehicle inspections, defensive driving, emergency preparedness, and correct use of restraints and accessibility equipment.
  4. Align practice with organisational policies and compliance standards
    •  will gain confidence in following workplace transport protocols, adhering to NDIS Practice Standards, and applying road safety regulations to ensure compliant service delivery.
  5. Build a culture of accountability in participant transport safety
    • Learners will appreciate how their personal responsibility contributes to an overall culture of safety and accountability, reinforcing trust and quality across the organisation’s transport services.
